Intro

Animation is a dynamic and versatile medium that transcends traditional boundaries, enabling artists to create vivid, engaging worlds and characters. This project explores the various types, tools, and features some of my personal projects.

General Info

Animation has allowed storytellers to tell stories in unique ways. Animated films' visceral fantasy worlds have the power to rekindle creativity and the enchantment of storytelling for audiences of all ages. Therefore, animation is a perfect place to start if you are or want to be a storyteller.

Definition

Animation is the art of making inanimate objects appear to move. It is the art and science of making pictures or images appear to move. Animation is not the art of making drawings move, but the art of drawing movement. It is a method of photographing successive drawings, models, or even puppets, to create an illusion of movement in a sequence.

Types of Animation

1. Traditional Animation

Traditional animation, or hand-drawn animation, involves creating each frame by hand. Artists draw key scenes and fill in the in-between frames for smooth movement. These drawings are transferred to transparent sheets called cels, colored, and photographed frame by frame. This method, used in classics like Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," is valued for its artistic quality.

2. 2D Animation

2D animation is a technique where flat, two-dimensional images are sequenced to create the illusion of movement. Artists create characters, backgrounds, and objects on a flat plane, often using digital tools or traditional hand-drawing methods. The process involves keyframing major poses and filling in the in-betweens to ensure smooth motion. Popular examples include TV shows like "The Simpsons" and films like "The Lion King." This style is appreciated for its simplicity, clarity, and artistic expression.

3. 3D Animation

3D animation creates lifelike, three-dimensional characters and environments using computer software. Artists model, texture, rig, and animate these elements in a virtual space. Popular examples include movies like "Toy Story" and "Frozen." This technique is known for its realistic depth, detail, and dynamic movement.

4. Stop-Motion

Stop motion is an animation technique where physical objects are photographed frame by frame, with slight movements between each shot. When played in sequence, these frames create the illusion of movement. This method is used in films like "Coraline" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and is known for its distinctive, tactile quality and labor-intensive process.

5. Motion-Graphics

Motion graphics animation involves animating graphic elements like text, shapes, and icons to create engaging visuals. Often used in advertisements, explainer videos, and title sequences, it focuses on presenting information clearly and dynamically. This style is appreciated for its clean, modern aesthetic and effectiveness in communication.

My Personal Projects

Living Room 3D Model made with Blender

This was my final project for my Emerging Tech 1 course. Honestly, I remember beating my head every time I tried to work with Blender but I eventually got the hang of it. This 3D animation project is one of my favourites. I mean look at that rendering !! You can find the tutorials I followed at https://kin22.582mi.com/et1/exercise2.0/project2/index.html.

Underwater City made with Procreate and After Effects

With the illustrations I designed in Procreate and the 3D camera from After Effects, I was able to make this super cool and neat motion-graphics animation. I am an After Effects enjoyer so motion-graphics animation is one of my stronger suits, if I do say so myself. This was for a porject for my Video & Audio 1 course.

Emilia 3D edit made with After Effects

I am an avid After Effects enjoyer. Editing is a hobby I've had since I was 13. I love videos/pictures going woosh !! Although I vividly remember frying my brain at 3D manipulations in AE... I barely have time to edit nowadays due to the lack of creativity and time.. So take my 2021 Emilia from Re:Zero edit.
